Smoothies are a delicious way to hide all sorts of things from picky eaters! This is our favorite smoothie recipe, and I make it frequently.
I use kefir in our smoothies, but you can also use milk, laban, coconut milk, or coconut water. Kefir is an amazing probiotic drink which is packed with beneficial bacteria. These bacteria play a crucial role in our health. They fight off harmful bacteria, teach our immune system how to distinguish between good and bad, and even regulate our metabolism (how much fat we burn). Read more here about the importance of probiotics.
This smoothie is an awesome on-the-go healthy breakfast, and only takes minutes to throw together.
I love how I am able to get my kids to eat spinach and flax seeds with this smoothie (foods which they would normally avoid like the plague!). Both have very mild flavors and can’t be detected by the picky eater.
The benefits of flax seeds are numerous. They:
- reduce inflammation of the gut.
- protect against cancer.
- reduce cholesterol levels.
- are high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids.
- are high in fiber.
Spinach is another powerhouse of nutrition, containing high levels of protein, fiber, vitamins A, B6, C, E and K, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium.

I tried ur smoothie recipe today and was glad to see that my kids n husband liked it without guessing all that hidden goodness.
Even i usually have hard time eating avocados and spinach but when blended in smoothie it was really hard to pick up. I added some dates to sweeten my smoothie in addition to the honey.
I really like the way u usually give information on the nutritional value of the recipe ingredients 🙂
Keep up the good work !!
And thanks a lot for personally helping me to start making kefir at my home.

Thank you so much Dr Laura! my kids do not like kefir that much except for the two youngest ones who are just learning to eat and are curious. i’m sure adding berries will change everything inshaAllah.
should we soak the flax seeds overnight before using them or is it ok not to? Thanks.
Dr. Laura says
Thanks for your comments Zaynab! Flax seed does not require soaking if eaten in small amounts. I hope you have success with adding the berries!
