If you’ve never baked with blackstrap molasses before, I really hope you give these Molasses Cookies a try. Not only are they packed with nutrients, but they are soft, chewy, and addictively delicious!
What is Blackstrap Molasses?
Blackstrap molasses is a dark, thick syrup which is produced when the sugar cane plant is processed to make refined sugar. But unlike refined sugar, which is void of any nutritional value, blackstrap molasses contains many important vitamins and minerals. These include iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin B6, potassium and selenium.
Blackstrap molasses can help:
- prevent anemia.
- relieve stress and anxiety.
- stabilize blood sugar levels.
- prevent cancer.
- relieve arthritis.
- improve mental focus.
- ease menstrual symptoms.
- improve sleep.
- relieve constipation.
- maintain strong bones.
Besides baking these delicious Molasses Cookies, other ways to use blackstrap molasses include:
- For the skin: fight signs of aging, acne, eczema and rosacea by diluting molasses in water and apply to the skin. After 5 minutes, rinse with warm water.
- For the hair: Drink 1-2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses in water to help reduce hair loss. Another option is to dilute it with water and then apply it as a conditioning treatment for 15 minutes before rinsing
- For fast relief of painful menses: drink a cup of hot water or tea sweetened with blackstrap molasses.
- Roast sweet potatoes or carrots with some butter and molasses for a deliciously sweet flavor.
**For this recipe, if you’re in a hurry (or are just feeling lazy) and don’t want to be bothered with chilling/rolling/cutting out the cookies, just use less flour and form the dough into balls and bake. (See notes below the recipe)
And here’s a gluten-free batch I made using the coconut and almond flours, with honey as my sweetener…

|
- 1/2cup butter or coconut oilmelted
- 1/2cup sweetener of choicehoney, pure maple syrup, coconut sugar, or pure cane sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/3cup molassesI use blackstrap molasses
- 3cups whole wheat flour*or gluten-free baking flour, or 2 1/2 cups almond flour plus 1/2 cup coconut flour
- 1teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4teaspoon baking powder
- Preheat your oven to 350 F (180 C).
- In a medium bowl, mix the butter and sweetener of choice. Add in the egg and molasses and continue mixing until well blended.
- In a separate bowl combine the flour and the remaining ingredients.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet mixture until the two are well combined.
- Chill the dough in the fridge for about 30 min- 1 hour until firm. Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) and use your favorite cookie cutter to cut out shapes. The thinner you roll the dough, the crispier the cookies will be.
- Note: If you are using the almond and coconut flours, rolling the dough out is a bit difficult. So I would recommend just rolling the dough into balls and placing on the cookie sheet.
- Place cookie shapes on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake at 350 F (180 C) for 8-12 minutes. The time will vary depending on how thick your cookies are. Remember that the cookies will become more crisp as they cool.
- Enjoy!
**If you're in a hurry (or are just feeling lazy) and don't want to be bothered with chilling/rolling/cutting out the cookies, use only 2 1/2 cups of flour. The dough will be softer and you can form it into tablespoon size balls and place on the baking sheet. Press down gently to flatten the dough balls slightly before baking.

Dr. Laura says
I have seen it at Carrefour and Danube, but it’s not always available unfortunately. You could also get from herb.
Hafsa says
which almond flour or coconut flour do you use and where is it available?
Dr. Laura says
I get my coconut flour from here: https://sa.iherb.com/pr/Nutiva-Coconut-Flour-Gluten-Free-3-lb-1-36-kg/45664
And I make my own almond flour with a high-speed blender.

I haven’t tried this so I can’t say for sure, but I think it would work. Let me know if you give it a try!
Hafsa says

You can fold in the flour. Sorry I’ve never tried this with barley flour so I’m not sure how it would turn out. Please let me know if you try it!
